Dehradun, August 31, 2025: In yet another step towards transforming Uttarakhand into a power hub, the District Magistrate, Savin Bansal, convened a meeting of all relevant authorities to discuss the compensation to be paid to families affected by the Lakhwad Multipurpose Project and the proposed land acquisition for the Tyuni-Plasu Hydro Electric Project. The District Magistrate emphasized the urgency of distributing the compensation amount to the affected families from the Lakhwad project and accelerating the land acquisition process for the Tyuni-Plasu project.

Significance of the Projects

During the meeting, DM Bansal asserted, "The Lakhwad and Tyuni-Plasu projects are not only pivotal for our district but are of utmost importance for Northern India. This is a dream project of the Chief Minister, which heightens my and your responsibilities further." He instructed that compensation distribution, asset evaluation, and damage assessment should be completed by September 15. Every eligible affected family is entitled to the full relief package, and camps should be set up in villages to ensure documentation and distribution of compensation are carried out seamlessly.

The Lakhwad project aims to produce 300 megawatts of electricity, significantly boosting power generation in Uttarakhand while also addressing irrigation and drinking water needs across six states including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

Action Plan and Required Measures

The District Magistrate directed officials to ensure prompt distribution of compensation for acquired land and farmers' assets related to the project. He stressed that there should be no unnecessary delays in any case and urged swift payment of revised compensation to the remaining affected individuals. For farmers yet to submit their documents, the officials were instructed to hold camps in September to facilitate the distribution of relief grants.

Furthermore, in reviewing the development of the Tyuni-Plasu Hydro Electric Project, which holds a capacity of 72 megawatts and requires 5.999 hectares of land, the DM required all committees formed for the project to submit a joint survey report by September 15. Various departments were also asked to evaluate the assets built on acquired lands, with reports to be submitted expeditiously.

Future Prospects for Uttarakhand

The Lakhwad project, characterized as one of the most crucial hydroelectric and irrigation projects in Uttarakhand, is anticipated to generate substantial electricity, aiding not just Uttarakhand but five additional states. Reports indicate a total of ₹30.34 crores in grants to be distributed to affected farmers, with a significant portion already disbursed. However, 12 villages comprising 114 farmers have yet to submit their documents, delaying distribution.

As the meeting unfolded, officials including Additional DM Jay Bharat Singh highlighted the progress but noted discrepancies among the farmers. He emphasized joint survey assessments to ensure a fair and equitable process moving forward.

In conclusion, the combined efforts surrounding the Lakhwad and Tyuni-Plasu projects underline a strategic initiative aimed at establishing Uttarakhand as an energy-efficient state. The developments not only demonstrate governmental commitment but also set a precedent for handling similar projects in the region. Achieving these goals necessitates cooperation among various departments and the active involvement of the local populace.
